Mobilepro recently acquired several wireless Internet service providers
that enabled it to amass over 20,000 subscribers and make it the #1 wireless
ISP in the United States.
On February 1, 2006, MobilePro Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: MOBL)
announced that it had completed a merger with Kite Networks, Inc., in an all
stock transaction.
Kite Networks, a privately held company based in Ridgeland, Miss.,
was a provider of high- speed Internet access, e-mail and web hosting
to businesses and consumers through point-to-point and point-to-multipoint
fixed wireless broadband networks. Kite was a lucrative acquisition for Mobilepro because they had a contract
with Sprint to manage the customer base for the
Sprint Broadband Direct
MMDS service. In fact, Kite has quitely been signing up new customers on
Sprint's behalf for a while.
In addition to the fixed wireless ISP acquisition of Kite, Mobilepro also
made a sizeable investment in Wi-Fi mesh network provider,
WazTempe. WazTempe
had recently bid and won a municipal contract to cover a 40-square-mile area
of Tempe, Ariz., including the college campus of Arizona State University.
The Wi-Fi municipal wireless network will reach more than 65,000 households,
1,100 businesses, 50,000 students and hundreds of thousands of visitors. The
network infrastructure will consist of approximately 400 antenna and radio
units located on streetlights and buildings throughout the city.
Mobilepro takes the mainstream approach to delivering fixed wireless service. They
dispute the Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) technical approach espoused by the folks at Clearwire
and the WiMAX crowd.
"The most annoying misconception about WiMAX is that people seem to decouple
the coverage claims from the spectrum used. It is reasonable to expect NLOS
service in the Base Radio Systems (BRS) spectrum where output power limits
are on the order of those in the PCS bands (kilowatts!!)," said Jon Steadman,
Mobilepro's Chief Operating Officer. "It is not reasonable to expect the same
level of NLOS service in the unlicensed bands where you are limited to less
than a couple of watts. The claims that are being made are that if you implement
WiMAX in your network, you will get NLOS at incredible distances, period."
Steadman adds, "We have spent a significant amount of time educating investors
and the business community that this is not the case and that putting the
wireless industry on hold until such time as WiMAX is available is not going
to provide the answer in all cases."
The consolidated company currently manage around 20,000 customers
throughout the United States Mobilepro serves 19 cities throughout the United States, including
Hurst, Houston, Dallas and Beaumont, Texas; Coshocton, Ohio;
Kansas City, Missouri; Janesville, Wisconsin; Shreveport, Louisiana; Tempe,
Arizona and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Mobilepro Wireless Coverage Map
