FragMart's Point-to-Point Link In August of 2002, Richmond, British Columbia, was selected to host FragMart, one of the largest gaming contests ever assembled in Western Canada. Gamers from all over the region were invited to the Richmond Curling Club to compete for over $10,000 dollars in prize money. Since club's facility was built for the ice version of shuffleboard, known as curling, the event needed a quick and cost-effective way to add Internet access. Over 600 gamers were expected to attend the event and FragMart needed a way to provide Internet access for the gamers, the exhibitors and the international gamers that wanted to keep track of the event's statistics. FragMart checked into the cost of obtaining several E1's. The local telephone company told FragMart that the cost of ordering several E1's and have them provisioned would cost several thousand dollars and would take at least 60 days to provision the links. The costs were outside the event's budget and the time constraints were even more of a concern. The FragMart management team quickly decided that broadband wireless was their only option. It would be cost effective and could be provisioned in the time frame necessary. Working with their wireless team, a 5 Megabit per second (Mbps) point-to-point link was built between the event and a local Internet Service Provider, which was more than 14 Kilometers from the site. FragMart got the bandwidth they needed and the event was very successful. The most impressive feature of this particular link was the ability to rapidly deploy the equipment (1 day) and rapidly extract it once the event was over. <= Previous Page | Next Page => Home
