Potential Fiber Rings and Access Points for Wireless ISPs
Fiber can be an integral part of the WISP's backbone
network, both in aggregating traffic from local distribution points and for transporting
traffic to/from Internet gateways. There are other methods of backhauling traffic as well.
Wireless backhaul, in particular, is suited to networks with multiple distribution bases,
as the distribution at those points would not need to be anchored to potentially scarce
wire line facilities. Even so, fiber can be used in such applications when efficient
distribution points coincide with fiber deployments. Also, local fiber can be used to
carry traffic between the WISP's operations center (central aggregation point) to its
internet gateway provider.
This report will show where backbone fiber facilities
are available in each market. The map below highlights known local/regional fiber rings
and access points.
