Awarepoint Expands Its Real-Time Location Solution (RTLS) at Jackson Health System

7/29/09 - Awarepoint Corporation announced an expansion of its Real-time Awareness Solution (RTAS) at Jackson Health System, an integrated healthcare delivery system in Miami, Florida. The addition of Jackson North Medical Center and Jackson South Community Hospital brings the Jackson Health System enterprise asset management tracking deployment to 4,459,000 million square feet, securing this ZigBee-based RTLS installation as the biggest in U.S. healthcare. Awarepoint serves its U.S. hospital customers through a sales, distribution and service agreement with Skytron.

Jackson Health System is governed by the Public Health Trust, a dedicated team of citizen volunteers acting on behalf of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners. In today's economy, the Public Health Trust is focused on solutions that offer high and rapid ROI, while improving quality of care. Enterprise-wide visibility of crucial resources was a key driver of the expansion, as equipment is shared across the entire enterprise.

"We are pleased to announce this expansion, and are certain Jackson Health System continues to represent the largest RTLS installation in US healthcare," said Jason Howe, Awarepoint's chief executive officer. "Awarepoint stands behind our belief that we offer the only truly practical enterprise-wide RTLS ( ) solution. We've seen other companies announce large contracts, but the industry has yet to see them fully deployed. Jackson Health System is up and running and experiencing value every day."

Jackson Health System is now tracking more than 12,000 equipment assets including items such as workstations on wheels, pumps, stretchers and ventilators. One of the primary values adds for this expansion is increased staff productivity. During the 90 days evaluated prior to expansion, Jackson Health System administrators verified 11,534 equipment searches. This is valued at $314,481 in staff time repurposed to conduct more meaningful tasks.

Jackson Health System is also quantifying a boost in equipment utilization based on increased supply chain visibility. Awarepoint has worked with the hospital staff in creating custom utilization rules that alert on stationary (idle) assets, as well as assets that enter or leave designated departmental and security zones. In the past 90 days, this increased utilization has saved the hospital $611,734.

In addition to value realized in locating and monitoring mobile assets, Jackson Health System has deployed 250 Awarepoint T2T temperature monitoring tags. These tags wirelessly monitor and maintain logs on temperature-sensitive assets such as refrigerators, freezers and warmers, and sends real-time alerts for out-of-compliance situations. This allows maximum staff response time and accountability for corrective action to protect critical temperatures.

A recent example involved an immunization refrigerator in the operating room. The refrigerator inadvertently had a door left open, which would normally require staff to dispose of the entire stock of medications. With Awarepoint, staff was able to pinpoint the highest temperature the refrigerator had reached, allowing them to preserve medications that had not gone above their expiration temperature. This automatic monitoring saved the hospital $6,800 on this one incident alone. With 250 temperature monitored assets, the potential savings is significant for Jackson Health System.

Since RTLS inception at Jackson Health System, the Awarepoint client services team has guided the hospital to follow best practices to insure continued value and usage. With a successful return on investment (ROI) demonstrated from Awarepoint's initial deployment at Jackson Memorial Hospital's South Wing, North Wing, West Wing, East Tower, Holtz Children's Hospital, the Ryder Trauma Center, the Mental Health Hospital, and the Highland Professional Building, expanding to the other hospitals was a natural next step.

"Our growth at Jackson Health System is a testament to our focus on developing long-term mutually beneficial relationships. Through understanding our hospital partners' needs, goals, and challenges; and positively impacting measurements, we go beyond 'return on investment' to true cash positive relevance," said Tammy Moore, Awarepoint's vice president of client services.
