Complete Healthcare Resources, Inc. Deploys Aerohive Wireless LAN

4/7/09 - Aerohive Networks announced that Complete Healthcare Resources Inc. has selected Aerohive's 802.11n wireless LAN solution for 42 customer facilities housing 5,500 beds. The new wireless LAN will initially support the company's eMAR (electronic Medical Administration Record) application, which uses barcode technology to monitor the bedside administration of medications, and may later support other point-of-care applications and voice over wireless LAN (VoWLAN).

Wireless LAN Technology Leadership

Complete Healthcare selected Aerohive over Cisco and Meru based on Aerohive's superior wireless LAN technology. Aerohive's cooperative control access points (HiveAPs) require no network controllers or overlay networks. Instead, software in the HiveAPs enables them to self-organize into groups called Hives. The result is a secure multi-service wireless LAN infrastructure able to support a vast array of wireless devices, application types and service levels, with faster client performance, wire-like resilience and lower capital and operational costs.

"We felt Aerohive's technology had leapfrogged that of Meru and Cisco," said Martin Diller, chief information officer, Complete HealthCare Resources, Inc. "Furthermore, because eMAR, as well as other future wireless applications, are mission-critical for us, we needed to find a partner with a solid and reliable technology that would work with us over the long term to integrate new applications. Aerohive not only had the right technology, but they also worked long and hard with us to create a partnership that helped us implement the solution in phases."

Mesh Networking for Whole-Facility Coverage and Resiliency

Complete Healthcare was also attracted to Aerohive's mesh networking capability. HiveAPs can establish wireless mesh connections between neighboring HiveAPs using the access points' second radios. This allows network coverage in hard-to-wire areas, such as Complete Healthcare's concrete-wall and plaster-ceiling facilities, and increases the network's resiliency, which was critical for Complete Healthcare's mission-critical applications.

Ease of Deployment and Management

To date, more than 100 HiveAPs have been deployed in nine sites around the country. Because the HiveAPs require no network controllers or overlay networks, deployment is fast and easy. During the pilot phase, Complete Healthcare found it required less than a third of the time it had allocated for installation and tuning.

Complete Healthcare uses the Aerohive HiveManager network management system (NMS) to manage the company's entire distributed wireless LAN from its data center in Dresher, Penn., a valuable convenience for an organization without on-site IT staff.

"Healthcare organizations like Complete Healthcare recognize the unique advantages that Aerohive wireless LANs can provide," said David Flynn, chief executive officer, Aerohive Networks. "We deliver dramatic cost savings, industry-leading resiliency appropriate for mission-critical healthcare applications, and technical advantages that translate into easy deployment and whole-facility coverage in healthcare settings."

Complete Healthcare estimates that HiveAPs will be deployed in the company's remaining sites by Aug. 2009.
