ISSYS Awarded Patent for New Broadband Wireless, Multi-Parameter, Sensing Device and Network

3/5/09 - Integrated Sensing Systems, Inc. (ISSYS) announced that the U.S. Patent Office has granted it a utility patent (US 7,483, 805) entitled "Sensing and Analysis System, Network and Method." Fifty claims were granted in this broad patent.

According to Dr. Douglas Sparks, Executive VP of ISSYS, this patent describes a new mobile sensor platform that will physically connect to conventional wireless communication devices, such as laptops, mobile phones and PDAs. The sensor can be plugged into a common USB port, where it will draw its power and communication capability from this gateway device. A wide variety of sensing devices can be deployed in this manner including chemical, physical and biological sensors covering a broad array of applications. Utilizing existing wireless devices enables the establishment of mobile worldwide sensing networks. Specific examples of some of the sensing capabilities covered in the patent claims include: microfluidic, optical, capacitive, infrared (IR), resistive, resonant, radiation, magnetic, pressure, motion, piezoresistive, SAW and piezoelectric sensors.

Dr. Nader Najafi, ISSYS President and CEO, stated that, "The potential commercial value and use of this highly enabling technology will be widespread including various medical applications, homeland security, environmental monitoring, chemical field testing, testing blood, breath, urine, biohazards, explosives, radiation, pollutants, biological indicators, DNA, monitoring for toxins and pathogens, industrial distributed sensors, and laboratory analysis.

"There are billions of mobile cell phones and laptops that can be used with the devices. Coupling both the huge existing sensing markets and technologies with the large, existing wireless and wired communication infrastructure, gives an outline of the potential market breadth for this technology. We are open for collaboration with strategic partners for different fields."
