D-Link Canada Now Shipping Broadband Wireless Gigabit Switch for SMB Enterprise Networks

3/4/09 - D-Link Canada began shipping a Layer 2 Plus unified wired/wireless Gigabit switch that is fully featured to work in a growing business network environment but affordably priced to meet today's economic challenges.

The new D-Link DWS-3024L, which supports up to 24 access points (APs), is designed to serve as a centralized wired/wireless controller unit to consolidate security, manage bandwidth and maintain the intelligence of an organization's entire wireless network.

In addition to monitoring users' identities and maintaining their authentication as they roam from AP to AP, this switch can configure and control all aspects of the wireless APs, including RF channel/power management, wireless traffic segmentation, AP roaming/load balancing, rogue AP detection and AP access security.

"This switch is ideal for the growing business," said Nick Tidd, vice president of channel development and general manager of business solutions for D-Link Canada. "It can serve as the starter switch to manage just one AP or to use for mixed wired/wireless LAN purposes. When more APs and up to four switches are added, a larger mobile domain can be achieved within the organization. It provides an architecture that unifies and simplifies an otherwise complex WLAN environment, and readily prepares an existing network for future technology upgrades."

The DWS-3024L provides 24 Gigabit ports with no restriction on port usage. Each of the ports can connect to a wireless AP, or to a wired LAN device, such as a server, a network storage device or simply another LAN switch.

Four combo SFP slots allow for flexible fiber optics connection, while optional 10-Gigabit modules enable bottleneck-free switch-to-switch cascading or attachment to a high-speed fiber backbone.

Other key features include:

  • 802.3af Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) to simplify installation
  • Redundant power supply support to reduce network downtime
  • Full security protection with WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption, MAC authentication, rogue AP classification and detection, and captive portal authentication. LAN security is provided by ACL, RADIUS, TACACS+authentication, DoS prevention and broadcast storm control
  • Centralized management of wireless network that includes automatic designation of users to virtual groups
  • Scaled, resilient, integrated management infrastructure
  • Key management for each security protocol
  • Configures and controls all connected APs
  • LAN management - Spanning Tree, 802.3ad link aggregation, port mirroring and jumbo frames, IPv4 packet routing, Quality of Service (QoS) with 802.1p priority queues, granular bandwidth control

"Today's businesses that are thinking about upgrading their current 10/100Mbps desktop connections to Gigabit capabilities can take advantage of the DWS-3024L's flexibility to act either as a wireless controller, as a dedicated, full-featured multi-layer LAN switch or as a dual-role device," Tidd added.

The DWS-3024L is available through D-Link Canada's wide network of solution provider channels, distributors and by directly contacting the headquarters sales staff. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (Canadian MSRP) is $6,381.
