Smaller Wireless ISPs Entering WiMAX Arena With Licensed 3.65 GHz Deployments

9/4/08 - NextPhase Wireless (OTC Bulletin Board: NPHS) discusses the WiMAX landscape and market opportunity for deploying 3.65 GHz broadband wireless networks to provide high-speed Internet access in smaller, regional markets.

"When looking at the landscape of WiMAX in the United States, what first catches your eye is the 800 pound gorilla known as Clearwire. Clearwire Corporation and Sprint Nextel Corporation joined forces in order to expedite their deployment of the first nationwide mobile WiMAX network. Together they own the largest share of licensed 2.5 GHz spectrum in the US, which they will leverage in building out their WiMAX infrastructure. And with significant backing from Intel and Google as well as cable giants Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks they stand out as the leading player in the WiMAX game," said Tom Hemingway, Chairman of NextPhase.

"But size isn't everything in the world of WiMAX. And the FCC's action to open up 25 MHz of the 3.65 GHz spectrum for licensed WiMAX service has opened the door for smaller, regional operators this year," added Hemingway.

Digital Bridge Communications is recognized for being the first US service provider to deploy a commercially ready mobile WiMAX service with its June launch of service in Jackson Hole, WY. Other companies taking advantage of this opportunity include Pipeline Wireless which is launching 3.65 GHz service in Boston, MA and NextPhase Wireless which is currently staging its deployment in this spectrum in Orange County, CA to be followed shortly with deployments in Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and Atlanta.

The 3.65 GHz range has been considered ideal for WiMAX because of its higher power allotment and the licensed nature of its spectrum. But until recently, WiMAX gear was not available in this spectrum. Once the FCC opened the availability of this spectrum vendors jumped on the opportunity and re-engineered 3.5 GHz WiMAX gear manufactured for use overseas to deliver a 3.65 GHz solution to the US.

The 3.65 GHz spectrum is particularly useful for supporting applications such as; Internet radio, IPTV, VoIP and other real time applications. Broadband access through WiMAX will bring an onslaught of new and creative ways to increase communications for the end user. Business to Business users will see increased quality in sophisticated applications usage.

NextPhase Wireless is on the forefront of the WiMAX 802.16e (mobile) effort. With a large rollout of Orange and Los Angles counties in Southern California, continued growth in the Business to Business segment will allow NextPhase to bring partnerships for VoIP, IPTV and other growing segments in the WiMAX arena. This will allow the Company an early competitive advantage over the 800 pound gorillas.

WiMAX subscriber projections suggest that there will 110 million subscribers by 2014 according to Maravedis Telecom Market Research and Analysis, a leading telecommunications market research and analysis firm.
