New WiMAX Products Available for 1.4 - 1.5 GHz to Provide VoIP and Wi-Fi Services 7/25/08 - Airspan Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRN), a leading provider of WiMAX broadband wireless access networks, today introduced a new Broadband Wireless solution that supports the frequency bands from 1.4 - 1.5 GHz. The solution includes base station equipment and a suite of subscriber devices including models with support for Voice over IP and WiFi.
A complete end-to-end solution, Airspan's new product offering includes the MicroMAX Base Station and EasyST, ProST, and ProST-WiFi subscriber units, all compliant with the IEEE802.16d standard. The solution also works with other band-independent Airspan products, including VoIP and WiFi extensions for EasyST and ProST, as well as VoiceMAX -- the company's unique solution for enabling VoIP QoS over a WiMAX network. Legacy TDM radio relay systems in 1.5-GHz were often deployed for voice by operators with universal service obligations. Now, many countries are pursuing universal service obligations for broadband. With this solution, Airspan provides a broadband product in the same frequency and, with VoiceMAX, provides lifeline quality voice service that the users of these legacy systems have come to rely on. Chad Pralle, Vice President of Marketing for Airspan Networks, commented, "Carriers around the world are using older 1.5 GHz systems for phone and low-rate modem services. Data applications have obviously moved beyond this level of connectivity, and in some cases these legacy systems are unsupported and in need of repair. The solution we've just announced will bring these users real broadband services at a fraction of the cost of these legacy systems." "Legacy systems were providing line-of-sight connectivity with a very low spectral efficiency. Our new WiMAX solution solves these problems and significantly increases the coverage and capacity," commented Paul Senior, Airspan's CTO. "Operating in 1.5 GHz has some very attractive characteristics. For example, there is a range increase of about 40% for 1.5 GHz compared to operating at 2.5 GHz that translates to half the number of base stations required for the same coverage area." Airspan offers the most extensive selection of frequency band support for systems compliant to the Mobile WiMAX and Fixed WiMAX standards. Want to learn more about wireless technologies?
