Tech Data U.S. Launches New Broadband Wireless Specialized Business Unit to Assist Computer Reseller Build Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Data Networks

9/26/07 - Tech Data Corporation (NASDAQ:TECD) established its Wireless Specialized Business Unit (SBU). The new SBU will provide sales, technical and product management resources to resellers capitalizing on the demand for indoor and outdoor wireless networking solutions like hotspots for small businesses, corporate campuses, universities and municipalities.

"While many resellers are already very familiar with indoor wireless technologies, designing, deploying and supporting outdoor solutions requires additional technical expertise," said Chuck Bartlett, Tech Data's vice president, Networking Product Marketing. "Tech Data's Wireless SBU is putting the necessary support structure in place to help resellers and our business partners capitalize on the outdoor wireless market and emerging demand for broader citywide municipal wireless solutions."

The Wireless SBU will leverage Tech Data's leading networking expertise, broad solutions offering and systems engineering resources to provide resellers with the support they need to profitably deliver a wide range of indoor and outdoor solutions. From leading manufacturers Cisco, D-Link, Linksys, Nortel, Proxim and SonicWALL, the SBU product offering includes wireless access points, routers, gateways, antennas, switches, controllers and site survey kits.

"Nortel is committed to channel partners and the crucial role they play in making our world-class solutions available to communities throughout the United States," said Angela Singhal, director, Municipal Wireless Solutions, Nortel. "Working with Tech Data, we are now better positioned to help VARs succeed in the municipal wireless market. This allows them to take full advantage of Nortel's experience in designing and building wireless networks and in identifying the right business models and partners for success."

The Wireless SBU will assist resellers designing the latest municipal wireless solutions. Beyond offering broader Internet access to residents and businesses, municipalities nationwide are increasingly deploying wireless solutions to more cost-effectively deliver a wide range of public services and communications tools. Municipal wireless solutions can be implemented to enhance public safety by providing wireless broadband access to police, fire, rescue and other emergency services. Wireless IP cameras can provide real-time surveillance of high-crime areas and traffic monitoring during peak drive times. It also enables cities to deploy VOIP and unified communications solutions over their own network, a cheaper and more versatile alternative to traditional telephone and cellular services.
