rPath Chosen by Newbury Networks for Enhancing its Wireless LAN Location Appliance

12/14/06 - rPath announced that Newbury Networks has selected rBuilder to help deliver its recently announced location appliance to its enterprise customers. Newbury provides real-time location tracking solutions through its patented location-based technology.

Using Newbury's 802.11 device tracking capabilities, the Newbury Location Appliance accurately and precisely locates Wi-Fi devices while enabling a host of enterprise applications such as asset tracking, voice, security and network provisioning. Using rBuilder, the development process for Newbury was reduced to a matter of weeks versus months.

"Once we selected Linux for the appliance, we realized the need to maintain the operating system in addition to providing administrative tools and software updates for our customers and partners," said Michael Maggio, president and CEO of Newbury Networks, Inc. "We were confident rBuilder along with the rPath Appliance Agent (rAA) could accomplish this, while also supporting branded versions of the builds for our OEM partners."

rBuilder and rAA provided Newbury Networks with the following benefits: Flexibility. Newbury can maintain multiple appliance software versions that are branded and configured for its OEM partners. These can be maintained from a common code base. Simplicity. Newbury quickly constructed a tailored Linux build for its application needs without the hassles of maintaining its own Linux distribution. Cost Savings. rAA provides an intuitive application administration interface with all the features that Newbury needs. Newbury avoided the costly development of an appliance management interface. Efficiency. With rBuilder, Newbury has a standardized build process and does not need to use a customized process each time it rebuilds the appliance.

"The appliance form factor is the industry standard for rapid deployment," said Billy Marshall, CEO of rPath. "The simplicity of the software appliance approach allows innovative application companies like Newbury Networks to get their products to market quickly with maximum channel uptake."

rPath provides rBuilder, the first platform for transforming applications into software appliances. For hardware appliance vendors, rBuilder provides a standard and repeatable way to build the appliance image automating what is typically a manual process. rBuilder also streamlines and simplifies field maintenance of appliances through online updates. This helps vendors provide continuous value to customers. For software vendors, rBuilder eases the transition to providing a hardware appliance version of the product. The company is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina.
