PMC-Sierra Announces the Availability of a Carrier-Class VoIP Wi-Fi Broadband Router Platform

9/20/05 - PMC-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS) announced the addition of a VoIP Wi-Fi Broadband Router platform to its family of production-ready reference designs for residential Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). PMC-Sierra's solution enables a Triple Play performance wireless home router with simultaneous --
  • Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)-quality voice,
  • Wire-speed Fast Ethernet Routing and Firewall performance, and
  • Video-over-IP Service capability.

This solution provides a customizable, Open Source-based platform that allows Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to rapidly deploy highly differentiated features and derivative platforms.

"The Residential Broadband VoIP market is entering a period of very rapid growth as service providers begin widespread deployment of IP-Enabled services to their customers," says Albert Ju, the assistant vice president of the CPE Product Line at ZyXEL, the largest worldwide vendor of DSL router and VDSL equipment. "To meet their aggressive growth targets, carriers are demanding value-added but price-competitive CPE solutions that offer PSTN-equivalent voice service quality, combined with simultaneous high bandwidth routing performance. PMC-Sierra's solutions address these critical requirements and enable the delivery of very competitive platforms."

PMC-Sierra's VoIP technology is the first to successfully complete compliance testing at the China Netcom Group Labs, achieving exceptional voice quality measurement results with a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) of greater than 4.1. In addition, PMC-Sierra's VoIP solutions have already achieved Best-in-Class certification results from China Telecommunication Technology Labs (CTTL), and Korea's Telecommunications Technology Association.

The key to ensuring subscriber growth for VoIP service providers is voice service quality that is indistinguishable from PSTN-quality services under all Internet conditions.

"Carrier validation of VoIP technology is essential for the rapid deployment of services in this competitive market," said Dino Bekis, vice president of marketing for PMC-Sierra's Communications Products Division. "The China Netcom Group Labs testing has provided our best results to-date. Superior voice quality together with high-performance routing allows PMC to offer customers like ZyXEL an impressive portfolio of solutions that will ensure competitive, faster time-to-revenue end-products."

PMC-Sierra's field-proven Voice Processing Module (VPM) is supported across the entire family of MSP products, delivering Carrier-Class, PSTN-quality VoIP services in solutions ranging from low cost ATAs through to high performance CPE Broadband Routers and Gateways.

PMC-Sierra's MSP4200 device is at the heart of the PMC-Sierra VoIP Wi-Fi Broadband Router solution. (See: Figure 2) The MSP4200 supports a DSP-based voice engine to maximize the MIPS processor's performance in management, signaling and high speed IP Routing tasks. This architecture ensures wire-speed Fast Ethernet Routing and Firewall performance with up to four channels of simultaneous Voice over IP. A PCI interface provides further flexibility by supporting a wide range of 802.11 Wi-Fi chipsets and other peripherals.

The VoIP Wi-Fi Broadband Router software builds upon PMC-Sierra's previous solutions, including all necessary Voice Processing and SIP signaling together with Linux-based routing, Firewall and management functions for a fully functional platform. The Open Source-based Linux application software provides a foundation for ODMs and OEMs to benefit from the Triple Play service deployment roll-out by bringing unique and differentiated home router products quickly to market.

PMC-Sierra's VoIP Wi-Fi Router turnkey system design is available today and includes the MSP4200 device, schematics, gerber files, source and object code together with extensive documentation.

The platform provides all of the hardware and Linux-based software to build a production-ready product supporting the following key features:

  • SIP signaling stack
  • 2 FXS ports for 2 simultaneous voice calls, supporting G.711, G.723.1 and G.729
  • FXO port for intelligent call forwarding and power failure back-up functions
  • WAN Ethernet port for broadband Internet connectivity
  • Integrated 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi access point support and 4 Fast Ethernet ports for simple home networking
  • Network Address Translation (NAT) and Firewall
  • Fax relay support with T.38 compliance
  • Web-based GUI for local or remote system management
