Maravedis WiMAX Forecast Ranks the Russian Federation Among the Top Five Opportunities in the World

Maravedis Research announced a new research report entitled the "Russian Federation Broadband Wireless and WiMAX Market Analysis and Forecast 2006-2010," which details the golden opportunities now present within the Russian Federation for BWA and WiMAX wireless products and services.

The new 100-page report, the second of a series that includes reports on Brazil and India, provides an in- depth review of the broadband wireless and WiMAX markets and regulatory activity taking place in Russia.

The Russian economy is flourishing and demand is quickly outpacing the supply of the telecommunications services provided by legacy wired telecommunication infrastructure built during the communist era. For example, more then 70% of Russia households do not have access to fixed wired telephone services. Instead, customers have flocked to cellular phone carriers, which have built a tremendous infrastructure of cellular towers to provide service to more 130 million customers or 90% of the Russian population.

The same trend is predicted for broadband wireless Internet access services, such as WiMAX, that will provide high-speed data services over a wireless data infrastructure. Small- to medium-sized businesses realize the potential of websites and doing business online via the Internet in order to reach the worldwide economy. Since 75% of Russian households can not get basic dial-up Internet access, wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) are expected to break open the large pent up demand for broadband Internet connections.

"There is huge potential for broadband wireless Internet and voice-over-IP services in Russia because there are still more than 40,000-50,000 towns and villages with no basic communications services," explained Maravedis' Russian and Ukraine Senior Analyst, Artur Mironenko. "And, as the economy keeps improving, not only do customers want high-speed connections, but in many areas they now have the household budgets to pay for high-speed Internet access."

This Week's WiMAX 802.16 News:

  • WiMAX is Catalyst for Broadband Wireless Access in Asia-Pacific
  •   Worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) has invigorated broadband wireless access (BWA) as a viable solution to address the increasing digital connectivity needs in the Asia Pacific region. At the same time, disparate economic, geographical and regulatory conditions across the region have led to the contrasting pace and development of WiMAX in these diverse markets.

New analysis from global growth consulting company Frost & Sullivan, WiMAX Growth Opportunities in Asia Pacific, reveals that revenue in the WiMAX services market -- covering 12 major Asia Pacific economies -- is forecasted to total USD 165.3 million by end-2006, and could reach USD 5.4 billion in 2010.

  • Fujitsu Finalizes Acquisition of Intellectual Property for WiMAX Products
  •   Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) announced that it has completed the acquisition of Wi-LAN's IP Division. This acquisition includes Wi-LAN's entire technology development division, including all 802.16d- like, standards-based MAC and PHY technologies. Fujitsu Microelectronics has also employed a large group of highly skilled engineers from Wi-LAN and formed a new wholly owned subsidiary, Fujitsu Microelectronics Canada Inc., in Calgary, Canada.

"Since partnering with Wi-LAN in 2002, Fujitsu has leveraged WiLAN's OFDM technology in the development of our IP cores," said Kazuyuki Kawauchi, president and CEO of Fujitsu Microelectronics America. "This acquisition reinforces Fujitsu's commitment to the WiMAX market, and is also good news for our customers and prospects, who are embracing WiMAX and the Fujitsu SoC as standards of excellence in broadband wireless access.

  • Cree Introduces GaN HEMT to Broaden WiMAX Power Transistor Options
  •   Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) announced sample availability of its new 15-watt packaged gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT), the CGH35015, which is optimized for broadband wireless access and for WiMAX applications operating between 3.3 GHz and 3.9 GHz. GaN HEMTs offer higher linear power and enhanced efficiency performance over wider bandwidths than traditional technologies such as silicon LDMOS or GaAs.

The CGH35015 typically produces 2.5 watts of average output power and 20 percent drain efficiency over the frequency range of 3.3 to 3.9 GHz. It features 11 dB of small signal gain and 2 percent error vector magnitude (EVM) under orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation when operated at 28 volts.
