Intel Outlines 802.16 Broadband Wireless Vision

Broadband wireless technologies will help bring the next five billion users to the Internet, an Intel Corporation executive explained today.

Sean Maloney, Intel executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Communications Group, outlined the company's plan to work with the industry to dramatically drive down the cost and increase the availability of broadband wireless technologies, including 802.11 wireless local area networking (WLAN) and 802.16 wireless metropolitan area networking (WMAN). This effort will help attract the next wave of Internet users, particularly those in emerging markets such as China, India and Latin America.

Specifically, 802.16 technology, often referred to as WiMAX, complements WLAN by connecting 802.11 hot spots to the Internet and provides a wireless alternative for last-mile broadband connectivity to businesses and homes.

"The wireless service provider and telecommunication equipment industries are rallying around WiMAX technology because of its tremendous cost advantages to provide last-mile connectivity to large parts of the world that are too expensive to serve with wired technologies," said Maloney. "WiMAX- certified systems will provide the building blocks to connect the next five billion users to the Internet and truly usher in the broadband wireless revolution."

The vision outlined by Intel includes delivery of standards-based silicon for both WLAN networking and cost-effective and interoperable 802.16 WMAN hardware. The 802.16 silicon -- which will be certified by the WiMAX Forum that oversees the compatibility and interoperability of 802.16 technology -- will be developed and deployed by a growing ecosystem of wireless equipment makers and service providers.

  • Sears Tower Aiming for New Wireless Heights
  •

Sears Tower is expected to soon become one of the first commercial office buildings in the United States to have an in-building wireless system throughout, improving service for wireless phones and allowing for Wi-Fi computer access in offices on all floors of the skyscraper.

MetLife, on behalf of its affiliate Metropolitan Insurance and Annuity Company, has announced that an agreement has been reached with InnerWireless, Inc., giving the in-building wireless systems and services company the right to market the Sears Tower system to wireless service providers. As agreements are reached with the wireless carriers, InnerWireless will install a neutral host system throughout the 110-story building.

  • Spectrum Leasing Market Gains Momentum for First Avenue
  •

First Avenue Networks (OTC Bulletin Board: FRNS) announced market assessment findings indicating that telecommunications service providers are positive about growth in the fixed broadband wireless market.

First Avenue Networks discussed spectrum needs and market trends with over 300 telecommunications operators during the past 24 months. Their findings showed that a desire to gain control of network costs and reduce capital expenditures were the main drivers toward leasing licensed spectrum and implementing fixed wireless networks. Many mobile, fiber network and other wireless operators told First Avenue Networks that they would utilize fixed broadband wireless to accomplish these objectives as long as all other component costs were in balance. Equipment innovation and lower pricing, improved integration efforts and access to economically priced spectrum together create that balance. These findings coincide with the highly anticipated FCC ruling, which dramatically opened up the secondary spectrum leasing market.
