The HIPERMAN standard is intended to provide an interoperable air interface for Fixed Wireless Access systems in the 2 - 11 GHz bands in Europe and other parts of the world that follow ETSI standards. The HIPERMAN working group will utilize the OFDM sections of the emerging IEEE 802.16a standard as the baseline Physical Layer (PHY) specification for the ETSI HIPERMAN standard.
This decision came after lengthy discussions over the technical merits of OFDM versus Single Carrier technology as the basic transmission scheme. The selection of OFDM technology obtained overwhelming support from the HIPERMAN working group.
"We are pleased with the support that OFDM is getting with the global standards bodies," says Nico van Waes of Nokia Wireless Routers and Chair of the Fixed Wireless Access working group of the OFDM Forum. "The decision to utilize the IEEE 802.16a OFDM PHY as the basis for the ETSI HIPERMAN PHY specifications is one more step towards reaching the OFDM Forum's goal of a single global interoperable OFDM-based standard for high-speed wireless communications."
ETSI (the European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is a not for profit organization whose mission is to produce the telecommunications standards that will be used for decades to come throughout Europe and beyond.
ETSI plays a major role in developing a wide range of standards and other technical documentation as Europe's contribution to world-wide standardization in telecommunications, broadcasting and information technology. ETSI's prime objective is to support global harmonization by providing a forum in which all the key players can contribute actively. ETSI is officially recognized by the European Commission and the EFTA secretariat. About The OFDM Forum:
The OFDM Forum is a market development association comprised of hardware manufacturers, software firms, telecommunications companies and other users interested in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technology in wireless applications. Founded in December 1999, the OFDM Forum was established to promote a single, compatible global OFDM standard for cost-effective, high-speed wireless networks on a variety of devices. Founding companies are: Ericsson, Nokia, Philips Semiconductors, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Sony, Wi-LAN and the Testbed Center for Interoperability at the University of California at Santa Barbara (a division of CalTrans). The OFDM Forum has grown to include 61 members to date, 15 of which are listed as Principal Members of the organization. More information on the OFDM Forum can be found at www.ofdm-forum.com.
