Proxim Named Number One in IEEE 802.11
Broadband Wireless Market Share by In-Stat/MDR

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 3, 2003 - Proxim Corporation (NASDAQ: PROX), a leading provider of high-performance wireless local area networking (WLAN) and wireless wide area networking (WWAN) products, today announced that it was the market share leader in IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN Access Points and NICs for the first half 2002, according to research just released by In-Stat/MDR. Additionally, with the acquisition of the ORiNOCO(R) product line from Agere, Proxim is expected to become the market share leader in IEEE 802.11b enterprise NICs and a leader in 802.11b enterprise APs.

According to Gemma Paulo, wireless analyst for In-Stat/MDR, Proxim had a 58% share of the overall market for end user 802.11a NIC cards for the first half of 2002. The closest runner up only had a 16% share of the market. For 802.11a Access Points, In-Stat reported a 32% market share for Proxim with the next closest competitor at 21%.

In addition, Proxim expects to gain a leadership position in the 802.11b market through the acquisition of the Orinoco product line. As reported by In-Stat for the enterprise market, ORiNOCO 802.11b NICs held 8.6% market share compared to 7.4% for its nearest competitor. Including OEM partner shipments, ORiNOCO also held a leadership position in 802.11b AP market share.

"Demand for wireless LANs continues to grow, with significant interest in both 802.11b and 802.11a solutions," said Lynn Lucas, director of LAN product marketing for Proxim. "With Proxim's strength in both of these markets, we are able to provide customers with the solution that best fits their needs, regardless of standard."

"For the first half of 2002, Proxim was the market leader in the small, growing, and high-margin 802.11a market segment," said Gemma Paulo, wireless analyst at In-Stat/MDR. "Its strength in the 802.11a market, combined with the acquisition of the ORiNOCO 802.11b product lines, now positions Proxim as one of the leaders in wireless networking for the enterprise, service provider and hot spots markets."
