Wireless Broadband Company Scales Up to Handle Next-Generation
Developments and Commercial Deployments

San Francisco, July 17, 2002 – SOMA Networks today announced that Joe Buccino has joined the company as Vice President of Engineering.  A high-tech veteran with a proven track record of successfully managing complex development and engineering operations in periods of significant growth, Buccino oversees SOMA Networks' world-class engineering team, which has developed the industry's leading wireless broadband system, offering broadband Internet access and carrier-grade voice services to the residential and small-office market.

"With the success of our commercial operations in both North America and abroad, SOMA Networks is scaling up to handle customers of all sizes and increasing numbers of commercial deployments.  Joe Buccino brings innovative and tested leadership to our engineering operations at this critical stage of the company's development," said Mark Rau, senior vice president, engineering and operations, at SOMA Networks.  "With a diverse technical background encompassing software development, hardware development, and wireless systems and nearly two decades of management experience in challenging technology environments, Joe is superbly equipped to lead the creative engineers who develop the next-generation wireless broadband systems that we market and deploy around the globe."

"As its customer engagements and key partnerships demonstrate, SOMA Networks has emerged as the industry-leading provider of wireless broadband systems, with its large cell coverage, non-line-of-sight access, and self-installable subscriber equipment," said Buccino. "I am excited to contribute my management experience and technical expertise as SOMA Networks ramps up its engineering operations to handle next-generation system development and commercial deployments, including those currently in progress with NTT Communications in Japan and Always On Network in the United States."

Since 1980, Buccino has held management positions at a variety of technology companies, most recently enterprise software developer Avotus Corporation, where he served as Chief Technology Officer.  Prior to his work at Avotus, Buccino spent nearly ten years as Vice President of Engineering at Psion Teklogix Inc. (formerly Teklogix Inc.), where he led the creation of the company's market-leading wireless data communications systems and played a key role in the successful sale of Teklogix to Psion Plc. in 2000.

Previously, Buccino was the Director of Engineering at Electrohome, Limited, and a Research Scientist at Bell Northern Research.  Buccino earned master's and bachelor's degrees in mathematics and computer science from the University of Waterloo.
