Aperto Networks Approved By Industry
Canada for 3.5 GHz Wireless Systems

Regulatory Authority Gives Green Light to Licensed Band Fixed Broadband
Wireless Services; Aperto Commences Shipment to Canadian Carriers

Milpitas, CA, January 7, 2002 - Aperto Networks, a leading provider of second-generation fixed broadband wireless access systems (F-BWA), has received regulatory approval of its end-to-end PacketWave(tm) multiservice platform from the Canadian regulatory authority, Industry Canada, for operation in the 3.5 GHz band. The company has also begun to ship 3.5 GHz production systems to Canadian wireless providers. Last year, Industry Canada approved Aperto Networks' system for use in the 5 GHz band.

The government of Canada maintains a strong commitment to its initiative of ubiquitous broadband access throughout the country. Industry Canada has completed a first round of spectrum allocations for F-BWA and will soon begin additional allocations. With fixed broadband wireless poised to deliver services across urban as well as rural areas, this approval sets in motion Aperto's ability to satisfy anticipated high demand.1

Aperto has already obtained regulatory approval in numerous overseas markets where licensed or license-exempt fixed broadband wireless spectrum is readily available, opening the door for the company to expand delivery of revenue shipments to its service provider partners around the globe.

"The 3.5 GHz spectrum is emerging as a global band for fixed broadband wireless access, with spectrum allocations already complete in many countries and more to follow", stated Alan Menezes, Aperto's vice president of marketing. "We see the Canadian market as very promising for fixed broadband wireless, and are pleased to see carriers taking a solid interest in using Aperto's solutions to deliver multiple services using licensed and license-exempt spectrums."

Aperto's PacketWave solution uses a common platform across all spectrum bands. The system operates in the 5.3 and 5.8 (UNII), 3.5 (FWA), 2.5 (MMDS) GHz frequency bands. This family of radios allows service providers to operate simultaneously in multiple frequencies on the same indoor equipment, and gives wireless operators investment protection while maintaining flexibility for future deployments across multiple markets.
