FCC Spectrum Policy
Advisor To Provide Keynote Address At Software Defined Radio International
Tradeshow In November
Significant Industry Growth Boosts
SDR Forum Membership and Event Attendance
ROME, N.Y.,
Aug. 12, 2002 - Paul. J. Kolodzy, Ph.D., senior spectrum policy advisor for
the FCC, will provide the keynote address at the Software Defined Radio (SDR)
conference and exhibition November 11-12 in San Diego, California. The event is
sponsored by the SDR Forum, an international wireless industry association, and
will cover a number of issues including the evolution of SDR technology and how
it integrates into existing infrastructures.
In addition to
Dr. Kolodzy, Greg Delagi, vice president and manager of worldwide digital signal
processing at Texas Instruments, will provide a second keynote talk on digital
signal processing for 3G and 4G SDR radio architectures.
"We're
excited that interest and adoption of SDR technology has progressed to the point
that our annual show can attract speakers of Paul's and Greg's statures,"
said Al Margulies, chief operating officer of the SDR Forum. "Since the FCC
approved SDR technology for commercial use this past February, we've seen
increases in the general awareness of the technology, the number of companies
creating SDR-based solutions, and in our membership."
With more than
160 pre-registered participants and more than 80 technical papers submitted to
date, the two-day event has more than doubled the Forum's original expectations.
Major sponsors include SDR Forum members Spectrum Signal Processing, General
Dynamics Decision Systems and QuickSilver Technology. For more information on
the conference, schedule and exhibitor information, please contact the SDR Forum
at 315-736-2433 or visit http://www.sdrforum.org/sdr02/main.html.
"Our
internal studies show that the wireless industry views SDR as a technology that
can help solve interoperability issues, provide efficient spectrum management,
and enable cost-effective technology updates," said Dr. Bruce Fette,
General Dynamics Decision Systems, and general chair for the SDR conference and
exhibition. "This conference will explore exciting applications made
possible by SDR technology, such as real-time location awareness for cellular
phones, portable command station capabilities for crisis management, and
advanced encryption for secure military communications."
Conference
highlights include a series of tutorials that will address topics such as the
issues involved in the design of software radios to enable integrated global
communications in 3G and 4G systems; channel models for wireless communications
with emphasis on the use of simulation for performance evaluation and
prediction; and regulatory and spectrum implications of SDR-enabled devices.
Serving as
conference co-chairs are industry leaders: Dr. Walter Tuttlebee, Executive
Director, Virtual Centre of Excellence in Mobile & Personal Communications
(Mobile VCE); Dr. Ryuji Kohno, Professor, Head of Division, Yokohama National
University Graduate School of Engineering, Division of Physics, Electrical &
Computer Engineering; and Dr. Joseph Mitola III, Consulting Scientist.
About SDR
Technology
In SDR, functions traditionally performed by hardware
via analog circuits, such as the generation of the transmitted radio signal and
the tuning and detection of the received radio signal, instead are performed by
software residing in high-speed digital processors. Because these functions are
carried out in software, the radio can be easily programmed to transmit and
receive over a wide range of frequencies using a variety of transmission formats
used around the world. In addition, the operating parameters of a software
defined radio can be easily changed in the field by a simple software change.
About the
Software Defined Radio Forum
The Software Defined Radio Forum is an international
industry association dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of
software defined radio systems that enable flexible and adaptable architectures
in advanced wireless systems. The membership of the SDR Forum spans commercial,
defense, and civil government organizations, and includes wireless service
providers, network operators, component and equipment manufacturers, hardware
and software developers, regulatory agencies, and academia. Presently numbering
more than 100 organizations, the SDR Forum's membership includes major
commercial wireless players from Asia, Europe, and North America. The SDR
Forum's administrative office is headquartered in Rome, N.Y. Additional
information is available on the SDR Forum Web site at http://www.sdrforum.org.
