| SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 29, 2002 -- Proxim
Corporation (NASDAQ: PROX), the company created by the merger of
Proxim, Inc. and Western Multiplex Corporation, announced today the seven
directors who will serve on the board of the corporation.
"These directors bring tremendous talent
and experience to help guide the new Proxim," said Jonathan N. Zakin,
chairman and chief executive officer. "This board will help us build
on the company's combined strengths and maximize our opportunities. The
strength of this board is representative of the way we are shaping this
new company for growth and success in the future."
A short biography of each of the directors named to the new board
follows:
Michael Boskin, 54, is T. M. Friedman Professor of Economics and Senior
Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also Adjunct
Scholar, American Enterprise Institute; and Research Associate, National
Bureau of Economic Research, and a member of the Panel of Advisers to the
Congressional Budget Office. In addition, he has served as Chairman of the
Congressional Advisory Commission on the Consumer Price Index and advisor
to Congressional committees, the Treasury and the Federal Reserve. He is a
director of ExxonMobil Corporation, Oracle Corporation, and Vodafone PLC,
and is a consultant to numerous other businesses and government agencies.
He served as Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers (CEA)
from 1989 to 1993.
Dr. Boskin received PhD., M.A. and B.A. degrees from the University of
California at Berkeley. Dr. Boskin served on the board of directors of
Western Multiplex Corporation prior to the merger.
Merle Gilmore, 54, is president of consulting and investment company
LKR Technology Partners. He spent 30 years at Motorola Inc., where he held
several leadership positions in the company's telecommunications
businesses. He also led Motorola's acquisition of General Instruments and
was president of Europe, Middle East and Africa. Mr. Gilmore is on the
Board of Directors of Denon, Ltd., the consumer electronics company, and
will serve as interim Chairman of the Board of D&M Holdings, Inc., a
consumer electronics company resulting from the pending merger of Denon,
Ltd. and Marantz, Inc. He received a B.S.E.E. from the University of
Illinois and M.S.E.E. from Florida Atlantic University.
David C. King, 42, is president and chief operating officer of Proxim
Corporation. Prior to the merger, Mr. King served as chairman, president
and CEO of Proxim, Inc. When Mr. King joined Proxim in 1992, he served as
vice-president of marketing and acting chief financial officer for Proxim.
Mr. King came to Proxim from Vitalink Communications Corporation, a LAN
internetworking subsidiary of Network Systems Corporation, where he served
as vice-president of marketing and general manager of customer service.
Mr. King has also held senior management positions within the high
technology and healthcare practices of McKinsey & Company, Inc. He
received B.A., J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Harvard University.
Jeffrey D. Saper, 54, is a corporate partner in the firm of Wilson
Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, the largest law firm in the Silicon Valley
specializing in high technology and emerging growth companies. He is a
member of the firm's Executive Management Committee and Policy Committee.
He received B.A. and J.D. degrees from New York University. Mr. Saper was
a director of Proxim, Inc. prior to the merger.
Ken Westrick, 44, has more than 20 years of management experience at
communications and computer companies. From 1997 through 2001, he was
president and chief executive officer of New Focus, a supplier of fiber
optic components. Mr. Westrick led New Focus through its transformation
from a small private start-up company to a significant publicly held
company. Prior to New Focus, Mr. Westrick spent nine years at Cornerstone
Imaging where he held positions such as senior vice-president, general
manager of the display division and managing director of Europe. He
received a B.A. from Northwestern University and an M.B.A. from Stanford
University.
Joseph R. Wright Jr., 63, is president and chief executive officer of
PanAmSat Inc., one of the world's largest providers of global
satellite-based communications services. Previously, Mr. Wright was Vice
Chairman of Terremark Worldwide, a developer and operator of network
access points (NAP's) in the U.S. and Brazil. He was also Chairman and
Director of GRC International, a public company providing advanced IT,
Internet and software technologies to government and commercial customers.
Mr. Wright was director of the Federal Office of Management and Budget and
a member of the President's Cabinet during the Reagan Administration from
1982 to 1989 and deputy Secretary of Commerce from 1981 to 1982. He
previously held positions as president of two of Citibank's subsidiaries
and as a partner of Booz Allen and Hamilton. He received a B.S. in
Professional Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and an M.I.A.
from Yale University.
Jonathan N. Zakin, 52, is chairman and chief executive officer of
Proxim Corporation. Previously, Mr. Zakin served as chairman and CEO of
Western Multiplex Corporation. Mr. Zakin also served as executive
vice-president, strategy and business development and member of the board
of directors at U.S. Robotics. He guided U.S. Robotics into new and
important communications markets by negotiating and completing several
successful acquisitions, including Palm Computing, Inc., and Megahertz
Corporation. Mr. Zakin has held executive management positions, both
domestically and internationally, with Winterhalter, Inc., Cosma
International, Brisk and Kindle, and J. Henry Schroder Corp. He received a
B.A. from New York University and an M.B.A. from Harvard University.
